SAID dal 1923, the best hot chocolate in London!
SAID dal 1923, is a small café, a few minutes walk from busy Regents Street. As you enter, the smell of chocolate draws you in.
To the left is a counter displaying all sorts of artisan chocolate. Displayed in large glass jars or neatly aligned in rows, are handmade truffles and an interesting variety of small chocolates (look out for the curry flavour!). The three containers hold melted white, milk and dark chocolate which are poured over the sides of the cup when you order a coffee or hot chocolate. This is a chocolate lover’s dream!
There are containers of 3 types of hot chocolate behind the counter, which are kept warm, and stirred continuously. You can order either Milk, Dark or Gianduja (hazelnut). You could even order it in a tiny chocolate cup with a chocolate saucer, and a chocolate spoon which melts as you stir.
Made from melted chocolate and not cocoa powder, this is traditional Italian hot chocolate: rich and dense, thick but not too sweet. It is high quality chocolate, rich in cocoa solids and absolutely delicious.
SAID dal 1923 Antica Fabbrica del Cioccolato, SAID stands for Societa Azionaria Industria Dolciumi. Founded in the San Lorenzo district in Rome in 1923, by the De Mauro family, it has remained a family business for 3 generations. The London branch is the first to open outside of Rome. It opened just a couple of years ago and is always busy. All the chocolates are all made in the factory in Rome and are transported to London.
The seating area is not very big, and there is often a queue, so you may have to wait a while, but it is worth it. Staff are all Italian and they are very friendly. In winter they have the fire going which is very cozy and you can buy a Panettone to take home. In the warmer months, it is lovely to sit outside and soak up the atmosphere.
