Experience all the fun of the GBBO in a fully kitted out marquee in Tooting.
Sponsored post.
I was invited by Love Pop Ups London to review The Big London Bake, in Tooting, London. All opinions are my own.
The Big London Bake have set up a large white marquee in the garden at the back of The Castle pub in Tooting for a Great British Bake Off style competition.
I teamed up with my daughter as we donned our aprons and assumed our positions at one of the 10 baking stations.
Fully kitted out with all the ingredients, equipment and instructions we might need, we jumped into action at those familiar words ‘On your marks, get set,….Bake!’
Our task was to make Marshmallow Cones in 90 minutes, using whatever we liked from shelves in the ‘Create Corner’.
After some lengthy deliberation over our choice of flavouring and decorations, we cracked on with the blending, the mixing and baking.
For the cones, we used vanilla essence and purple food colouring which produced a lovely shade of lilac. The mixture was spread over a stencil on a baking tray, popped in the oven for a few minutes, then shaped with a wooden roller before setting it out to cool. We had 4 perfect cones cooling in the rack when Adam (the organiser) came round and pointed out we had forgotten to include the butter!
Soldiering on, we filled our 8 fat-free cones with fresh berries.
Our marshmallow turned out well with the pink colouring, but neither of us could taste the pineapple puree. We piped the marshmallow over the berries and divided the cones for decorating.
There were quite a few decorations to choose from, so we selected several.
We dipped 4 cones in some melted chocolate, then in yellow sugar before sprinkling over a little matcha powder, ground Biscoff, and adding a pretzel. The remaining 4 cones were decorated with mini marshmallows, cut strawberries and the Biscoff crumb.
Our Marshmallow Cones were a visual delight! (though perhaps not a culinary one..)
Time was up! We carried our cones to the front of the tent to be judged and a winner selected. Adam judged each set of cones based on appearance, texture and taste. There were no soggy bottoms.
Sadly we did not win The Big London Bake, but we were commended for our eye catching masterpieces.
The staff on hand were very helpful and they even provided a cake box to take our Marshmallow Cones home.
The event was great fun and although we became totally absorbed in the competition vibe, there were some crazy moments and we had some great laughs.
I highly recommend this experience, so book it, grab a friend/family member and head down there. I look forward to returning soon to try their next challenge (the recipe is changed every month).
